This is likely the same painting exhibited as The Cavalier at the Second Exhibition of the Toledo Museum of Art as noted below.

The Cavalier, presented here in oil, was likely painted in Alten's Paris studio. A photographic image of the artist sitting in his Paris studio, seemingly in the same chair as the empty chair seen in this oil, is reproduced as Fig.3, on page 115, of The Grand Rapids Art Museum's 1998 publication, Mathias J. Alten: Journey of an American Painter.

See also Alten's watercolor The Cavalier (FRFI17). That composition shows seemingly the same model costumed as a cavalier standing on a Paris street. It too is inscribed "Paris" and dated 1899.

Additionally, an Alten pen and ink rendering of this model in the same attire (not included in this catalogue) but seen from the rear, was extant in a private collection in 2006.
