This painting has been alternately titled "The French Side of the English Channel." It was however, apparently originally titled, "On the Shore" as GRAM curator (1995) Jane Connell discovered the title inscribed in pencil at the upper left on the panel verso, and partially covered there by a more contemporary GRAM paper label. At upper left in pencil too, "Alten 3." The title, "The French Side of the English Channel" was found typed on a GRAM Accession label as well as written on a piece of paper in ball point pen.
This painting is likely the oil exhibited at the 1902 Toledo Museum of Art exhibition under the title, "Along the Shore."
