Note: Clearly painted after Kenyon C. Cox (1856-1919). Alten modified this copy by painting along the horizon his own version of a beach landscape reflecting the evirons of the Grand Haven area.

Painted for the Grand Haven State Bank with an accompanying mural, The Uses of Wealth (after Edwin H. Blashfield, 1848-1936) prior to Alten's trip to the Netherlands.

The Grand Rapids Art Museum - Mathias J. Alten archive contains Alten's handwritten letter-invoice for the two lunette paintings. The letter reads as follows:

"Grand Rapids Aug. 5th 1910

Statement for work done by Mr. Alten for Wm Clarke to be used as decorations at G.Haven Bank. Two figural compositions lunettes 7 x 14 feet as per agreement. $200.00
Yours truly, Mathias J. Alten"

The archive also contains an handwritten letter dated 8/5/1910 from William M. Clarke, Architect to Mr. N. Robbins, Grand Haven, Mich. that encloses Alten's billing and notes, "As Mr. Alten leaves for Europe the middle of this month, I presume he would appreciate a remittance from the bank."

The archive further includes a copy of a Grand Haven State Bank check dated Aug. 15th 1910 for $200 made out to and endorsed by Alten on August 18, 1910 at the Kent State Bank in Grand Rapids.
