Historical Context
The Grand Rapids Gas Light Company (incorporated in 1857) was located on the corner of Oakland and Wealthy Street in 1884. The work is very typical of Alten's earlier landscapes which are strongly rooted in the traditional Barbizon and Tonalist styles.
