Two of Alten's paintings focus on the industrial landscape illustrated by this map, Volume 4, 1913, depicting the West Side Power Canal emptying into the Grand River south of the Pearl Street Bridge. The canal was filled in during the 1950's and 1960's. The public Museum's Van Andel Museum Center and Grand Valley State University's Robert C. Pew Grand Rapids campus now occupy the site.
