Alten's eldest daughter Eleanore reported in the 1980s that her father painted a posthumous portrait of a woman who was lost in the 1912 sinking of the Titanic. She noted that the painting was made several years after the incident, and that she, herself, delivered the canvas to a now unknown relative of the drowning victim in Colon, MI. The identity of the portrait sitter remains unknown.
