A reviewer in the December 5, 1924 Grand Rapids Press article described this painting thusly: "A picture which stands out clearly and distinctly from the others is "Tragedy at Sea," representing a bit of Holland coast. Although painted in the gray atmosphere of Holland, the picture is keyed in a strikingly high tone. The helplessness of the rescue group on shore gives emphasis to the tossing, disabled ship far out at sea."

This is likely the painting exhibited at the Durant Hotel, Flint, MI circa 1928, under the title, "Sea Tragedy."
