Sand Devils are whirling transient formations caused by wind passing over and spinning up sand in desert or dune areas. In this instance, possibly along the dunes of the coast of Lake Michigan. In the same 1913 Grand Rapids Art Association exhibition, another painting was exhibited titled, "Holland Dunes" #35, more likely suggesting Holland, Michigan rather than a scene from The Netherlands.
