This painting appears on a 1950s inventory list of paintings in the possession of the three Alten daughters after Mrs. Bertha Alten's death in the 1940s. It is indicated as having been sold. The inventory notes dimensions as being 4' x 5' while the inventory completed in connection with Alten's Last Will and Testament indicates the painting's dimensions as being 48" x 50".
A horse shay is described as an one-horse, light, covered, two-wheeled carriage for two persons, drawn by a single horse. Thus, it may be possible that figures are seen in this composition.
