According to Patricia Moore's descendants, twelve-year-old Patricia, a neighbor of the Alten's on Fulton Street, was walking by Alten's home when the artist offered to paint her portrait. The painting was submitted to the Grand Rapids Art Gallery's annual exhibition where it won First Prize for portraiture.
Patricia died in 1986, and the portrait subsequently passed to her husband.
