Historical Context
In the fall of 1929, Alten travelled to Southern California and painted at the art colony in Laguna Beach where his pupil Norman Chamberlin had settled. The Laguna art colony was a popular location for many American artists during the cold winter months.
Landscape scene with a Sycamore tree with brown leaves is in the center. The tree forks into two where the branches begin growing. Other trees and grass can be seen behind the sycamore tree sporting green/yellow leaves. Fog covered hills/mountains in the distance. Signed in the lower right.
