Unlike the many agricultural scenes Alten painted, the absence of labor being performed gives this piece a particular calm and serene quality. Michigan’s scenery in the fall is an enchanting sight. Alten showcases this by adding deep colors to the leaves on the trees lining the water. He draws dimension out of different variations of color, like adding muted pinks and rich browns to the foliage.
