Historical Context
A study of Columbus landing on American shores. The sketch is a part of a series Alten created showing the early dissemination of Christianity in North America. Several incongruities exist in the drawing including the presence of Plains Indians and a Plains-style lodge on the eastern seaboard, and the fact that the spinach caravel is still in full sail while anchored offshore.
Description
On side A, Europeans are approaching the shore in a rowboat, their ship in the background. Two Native American greet them on the shore. On side B, men perfecting their craft can be seen. One man holds his paints while another works to sculpt wood.
