The sitters are the artist's daughters, Camelia at the left, Eleanore at center, and Viola on the right. The oriental screen seen in the background was painted by Alten and is seen in other portrait paintings.

This is also likely the painting that appeared in the Grand Rapids Art Gallery's 1938 Memorial Exhibition of Alten's work under the alternative title, "The Girls."
