Described in a February 27, 1921 Grand Rapids Herald article as, "The splendidly alive figure leans forward, hands lightly clasped, and head just a bit to one side. The golden hair, the fair skin and large blue eyes, the airy dance frock of light green silver cloth and silver lace, are exquisite against a background which exactly reflects the colors of sunshine on the water."

This is a portrait of Louis J. DeLamarter's first wife, the former Charlotte Clay. The couple were married July 29, 1897 and divorced December 7, 1911.
